Especially in today’s troublesome economy, with the high prices of digital cameras, rechargeable batteries, tripods, filters, and other accessories, you might be tempted to save some money by purchasing cheaper, generic digital camera media. And why not? Photos taken with cheaper media should look just the same as those taken with more expensive media, as long as the files get written correctly. Your JPG images will not come out more pixilated, and uncompressed TIFF and RAW files will contain the same information.

However, “saving money” has a few potential downsides:

On some generic memory I have used, even though the media did not outright fail, if you shot multiple photos quickly the memory card could ‘hang’, causing some photos to be lost. Since the photos were never successfully written to the media, they were unrecoverable.

* Brand name digital camera media may have limited warranties. If the media proves to be defective within a certain period of time after the purchase, it might be possible to get a replacement memory card. Some warranties may provide replacements at no charge; others might require modest shipping and handling charges.

Even with limited warranties, however, any lost photos on the defective media may remain lost. In some instances, media recovery applications may help. While I don’t vouch for any particular software package, publishers include DataRescue, Jufsoft, and MediaRECOVER.

* Brand name digital camera memory may be rated to handle better in extreme conditions (hot and cold environments), useful if you plan on mountain climbing or shooting photos at a beach or desert. Of course, in such environments you may deal with other weather-related problems such as faster-draining batteries and condensation forming on the camera lens.

* Even if you want to purchase brand name digital camera memory, you may be tempted to purchase such media from lesser known stores, online outlets, or auction sites. After purchasing items at some establishments (though certainly not all), you might find yourself with counterfeit memory, generic memory repackaged as brand name! Such memory may increase the chances of data corruption, perform slower than advertised, and quite possibly damage the camera as you insert or remove the media. Plus, counterfeit memory lacks any true warranty, even if the fake packaging claims one is offered. As the adage goes, if a price is too good to be true, it just may be.

(Note that if this scam happens to you, you cannot always blame the store for the sale. It may have unknowingly purchased this memory from a fraudulent distributor.)

I am not recommending always buying the most expensive media at the most expensive retailer – the choice is yours. Some of the above potential downsides may not apply to your digital camera or your shooting conditions. You might not require faster shooting, and certainly not all generic memory will corrupt your data. However, for those truly concerned about their photos being written correctly and transferrable to backup media without incidents, paying a few extra bucks may prove to be money well spent.

After my ass had become sore from my own kicking, wishing I had majored in journalism (hehehe I got into the field anyways!), I read an article in a music magazine about working on a cruise ship, so I applied. As it was, the cruise ship was only a few weeks away from its trans-Atlantic Mediterranean cruise and their dinner-music string quartet desperately needed a cellist. Having played double bass extensively, but never cello, I applied anyways and spent the following week learning all the Brahms and Strauss I could on that old bugger. Unfortunately, the audition piece was from the Baroque period, but I managed through it and got the job.

And what a job it was! I was able to see places I’d never dreamed of, all while enjoying the full amenities of a 5-star cruise ship. My room and board were paid for, so my seemingly small paycheck was all able to be funneled into my student loan. It was fantastic, but as all dream jobs go, it didn’t last very long—my stringed comrades and I were replaced with a set of speakers and an iPod by the next cruise season. Apparently the ship had been serving sub-par beef and our jobs were the first to go in order to provide better food for the patrons.

This job left me with a rare disease that sends those who suffer from it all over the world in search of a cure… I had caught the traveling bug! With my student loans finally paid off, I had literally no savings to fund such a trip, so I needed to find a job that would either take me on the road, or let me take it. After tossing around the idea of being a trucker, I later rejected the idea because I’d embarked on road trips all around the Southwest… there’s nothing to see out there! Just a lot of flat, straight roads and cows everywhere, and boy do those cattle stink! I needed something that would take me further away from home and I found such a job building, oddly enough, tradeshow exhibits.

At first I thought, how hard can it be? Nailing together some plywood, maybe a little painting and gluing? Boy was I wrong. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 290 million scrap tires are generated in the United States every year. While recycling tires has increased dramatically in recent years, the fact remains that there are too many used tires clogging our landfills. On the surface, this may not seem like a huge problem, but tire piles are more than just a nuisance – they are a health hazard. They attract pests like rodents who nest in them and mosquitoes that live in the stagnant rain water collected in the tires. In addition, if the tires catch fire, they produce black smoke and air pollutants, posing significant risks to humans, animals and the environment.

Fortunately, we can help to solve the problem by finding creative ways to recycle and reuse tire rubber. Here are five ways to keep tires out of landfills:

1. Curb ramps – Made from crumb rubber, auto curb ramps are used to bridge the gap from street to driveway in neighborhoods where rollover curbs make the transition difficult. In a three-piece curb bridge set, 12 tires are recycled.

2. 4. Rubber surfacing – Rubber tires are being used as playground and running track surfacing. The resulting material is durable as well as soft, lessening the impact of a fall and reduces injury to runners. This same material is also being used as mulch in road medians or landscaping areas.

5. Tires as fuel – Scrap tires can be used as fuel in shredded form or whole to make tire-derived fuel (TDF). TDF produces the same amount of energy as oil and 25% more energy than coal, and is used as a supplemental fuel source to wood and coal. In 2003, 130 million scrap tires were used for fuel.

These solutions are typically utilized by manufacturers, construction companies and government entities in their zeal to cut costs and be environmentally-friendly. Often your subject will be found in a setting that appears unnatural or unattractive in a photograph. For example, you may be taking photos in a zoo, but you don’t want the enclosure to appear in your picture. In these situations, the best approach is to zoom right in on the subject. This eliminates as much of the background as possible, and thanks to a narrow depth of field you can ensure that what little background can be seen is out of focus.

On the other hand, what if your wildlife subject is found in a beautiful landscape? Now you have an opportunity to take a completely different type of wildlife photograph; one in which the focus is not just on the subject, but how it relates to the environment you find it in.

Who hasn’t admired images of majestic elephants or giraffes trekking across an African plain with snow-capped mountains in the distance? In Australia we marvel at shots of kangaroos on a tropical beach, dingos on Fraser island, emus crossing an outback plain.

Photographs like these may have wildlife as the central theme, but as a photographer it is wise to think of them as landscape photographs. By approaching the lighting and composition as you would a landscape, you can use your skills to bring both the subject and its environment into focus.

In terms of lighting, the usual landscape rules apply. Early morning and late afternoon is usually the best time to take your photos, when the light is soft and the contrast is low. The warmth and softness of the light does more than just enhance the landscape; it also adds character to the wildlife, and can eliminate unwanted shadows from the face of the subject. With just the right angle, you may catch that sparkle in the eye that really brings your photo alive.

Just like landscape photography, there are exceptions to this rule. If your subject is found in the rainforest, or other places where there is patchy light and shade, it can be preferable to take your photos on cloudy days. In these conditions the contrast is reduced, allowing a nice even light throughout your photo.

So in terms of lighting, this type of wildlife photography actually calls on all of your usual landscape skills.

What about composition? Again, the methods of composition you apply to landscapes are also a good guide, but the animal subject adds a whole new dimension to the process. The way you position your animal has a big impact on the success of the image.

Remember your rule of thirds? If you don’t know about it, do a quick google search, it is easy to find. If you can position your animal subject according to the rule of thirds, it will add balance to the composition. In fact, I can go even further…if you can position the eyes of the subject near the intersecting lines (according to the rule of thirds), you can add even further impact. Viewers of the photo are drawn to these points in a composition, so this position will create instant eye contact between the subject and the viewer. And with eye contact comes a personal connection that will help viewers really feel something from your picture.

Of course the rule of thirds is not the only approach. In fact, sometimes you can take a better picture by deliberately ignoring the rule and creating something a little more ‘off balance’. But the rule is always a good place to start if you are struggling to find a composition that really works.

Another useful guide is to have your subject facing into the picture, not out of it. The eyes have a very powerful effect in a photo; we tend to look the way they are pointing.

That means if your animal is towards the left of the frame, it should be looking to the right, towards the centre of the picture. If you can set the shot up so that the animal is facing toward something you want to feature in the distance (remember, this is a wildlife photo, but it is also a landscape photo) you can achieve something quite special. Not only will the position of the background object become more prominent, you can actually suggest a relationship between the subject and the surroundings. Your photo will become like a story of the animal and the world it lives in.

All rules are made to be broken, so as a famous pirate once said, “They’re more like guidelines, really.” Nature is so diverse, there is never a single easy way to approach a subject. However, if you can occasionally capture an image that connects the viewer, the animal and the landscape, you will truly have a photograph to remember. In the meantime, you are going to have plenty of fun trying!
